Topkapi Palace is located on the historical peninsula of Istanbul and was built by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror in the 15th century. For 400 years it was the administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire and the residence of the sultans. The palace complex consists of various pavilions, courtyards, harem and government offices. Converted in 1924 into a museum, Topkapi Palace is an important cultural venue where valuable artefacts, relics and treasures of the sultans from the Ottoman period are exhibited.
