Sümela Monastery is located in the foothills of Karadağ in the Maçka district of Trabzon. Built in the 4th century, the monastery was built on a steep slope 1150 metres above sea level. The monastery is famous for its magnificent frescoes and natural beauties. Abandoned in 1923, Sumela was restored in 1987 and opened to tourism in 2010. In addition to being an important pilgrimage centre especially for Christians, the monastery is also a fascinating place to visit for tourists.
